Volleyball Wins Seven Conference and Regional Awards
SMC Volleyball was well-represented in the 2024 list of MCCAA and NJCAA Region XII honorees, with seven awards for the Roadrunners.
Freshman Gia Jania was named one of only six players on the MCCAA Western Conference All-Freshman Team. SMC's middle hitter had 122 blocks (a school season record), 233 kills and 36 service aces in her first college campaign, picking up a Defensive Player of the Week honor along the way. Jania was also named to the MCCAA All-Western Conference Second Team.
Sophomore setter Anna Johnson made the MCCAA All-Western Conference Team with an Honorable Mention. Anna crossed 1,000 assists this season in the match at Glen Oaks and kept right on going, finishing with 1,328 for her two-year career.
Sophomore libero Cadence Knight was named to the MCCAA All-Western Conference First Team. She holds all SMC digs records: match (34, 3x), season (778) and career (1,326). She also had 46 service aces this year, won Western Conference Defensive Player of the Week four times and earned NJCAA National Defensive Player of the Week once.
Sophomore hitter Josie West also made the MCCAA All-Western Conference First Team. She finishes her second year as the SMC record-holder for kills in a match (24, 2x) and kills in a season (455). West also logged 436 digs, 57 blocks and 30 aces this year. West's performance earned her a spot on the All-MCCAA Team - one of just 15 players throughout the state of Michigan to win that honor - and a place on the NJCAA Region XII Division II All-Region Team, one of just 18 players (in one of the biggest regions in the Association) to be so honored.
West will continue her education and volleyball career next season with the Lake Erie College Storm, an NCAA D2 school in Painesville, Ohio.
