Volleyball 2-0 Last Week
After a bye on Tuesday, the SMC Volleyball Team took care of business at home on Thursday and Saturday.
The Roadrunners defeated Glen Oaks 3-1 in the first match of the second round of conference play 25-22, 25-15, 22-25, and 25-12.
"This was a huge match win for us," Coach Jenny Nate said. "We needed to seal that win to slide into a tie for third place in the conference. Now, we will just keep focusing on the next match in front of us one point at a time as we work to climb the conference ladder. I was thrilled with the improvements we made this week - our defense did a great job with the short tip and cover ball pick ups tonight, and we were able to transition those saves into kills. Our hitters played aggressively and we had seven hitters who had positive hitting percentages. Our attackers did a great job blocking which also resulted in a lot of key points. We know we have to control the tempo of the game to win, and we did that tonight. We will head back to practice tomorrow and prepare for Oakland Saturday."
Leading serving scorers vs. Glen Oaks: Josie West 14 points; Nikki Nate 12 points, 1 ace; Emma Beckman 11 points, 3 aces; Shayla Shears 6 points, 2 aces; Anna Johnson 5 points, 1 ace; Bianca Hobson 4 points, 1 ace
Kills: Nikki Nate 14, Josie West 9, Bianca Hobson 9, Shayla Shears 6, Emma Beckman 5, Juliette Schroeder 2, Anna Johnson 1, Sophia Deeds 1
Then on Saturday, they swept Oakland 25-16, 25-13, and 25-10. "Today was a total team win," Nate said. "Our entire roster of healthy players were on the court today, and the score got progressively better each set which has been one of our team goals. Every player played confidently, consistently, and aggressively which resulted in the sweep. We have spent a lot of time watching film and doing a lot of self-evaluation; we head into practice daily with a goal to improve by 1% each day in some realm of our game. That work and focus is resulting in more wins and better score margins. Our hitting percentage has increased weekly, and our defense is making the play or getting a touch on every ball. Our block numbers were fantastic today too which put a lot of pressure on their attackers. I'm so proud of the drive and work ethic these ladies have, and we are excited to head to Marian Ancilla Tuesday for another conference match."
