Womens' Basketball Beats GRCC in Round 1
The 21-9 Roadrunners are on their way to Flint!
SMC Women's Basketball beat the Grand Rapids Raiders Wednesday night for the 3rd time this season, 54-44. The home victory before a big crowd in the 1st Source Bank Fieldhouse earned them a shot at #1 Mid-Michigan on Friday in Round 2 of the Great Lakes District C Bracket.
As usual between these teams, it was a tight contest with a lot of turnovers and tough going in the lane. SMC led by four after Q1 and doubled that lead going into the break. The Raiders had a run to get within 3, but then went cold from outside and the Roadrunners took advantage with consistent rebounding and defense. SMC was up 10 at the under-5:00 timeout and pretty much held it there for the W. SMC was led by freshman guard Morganne Postell with 14 points, freshman forward Caley Strahan with 11 and freshman guard Maggie Weller with 7. Weller's two blocks make 25 and counting for the season, which breaks the SMC record of 23 set by Tori Eldridge in 2022-23. Eldridge, with teammates Macey Laubach and Charlee Balcom, were in attendance Wednesday to cheer on the Roadrunners.
Tip for the game vs. the Lakers is a crisp 9:00am on Friday, March 7, in the Ballenger Fieldhouse on the campus of Mott CC. See the full bracket and details at https://njcaaregion12.org/tournaments/wbkb2C/2024-25/index
