Women's Basketball Splits Home Games
As the conference schedule grinds on, SMC Women's Basketball won one and lost one at home this week.
On Wednesday, the Roadrunners battled Marian Ancilla close all night. The margin was just a point when the Chargers sank two free throws with a few seconds left to beat SMC 54-51. SMC could not outplay the refs and tied the team record for personal fouls with 27 in the game, to the Chargers' 13. The Roadrunners were led by sophomore Amara Palmer with 16 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double. Freshman Morganne Postell added 10 and freshman Olivia Robinson had 9.
Saturday was a different story as the Kellogg Bruins visited the 1st Source Bank Fieldhouse, and SMC won by the score of 65-52. It was a game of runs, with the Roadrunners going up 9-3, then Kellogg tying it at 11. SMC was up 10 in Q2, but Kellogg closed it to five at the half. SMC led by 16 in Q3, then gave up 11 straight as the Bruins got a bunch of cheap layups by breaking the home team's press. Finally SMC was able to pull away in the fourth and win by 13. The Green and Gold were led by freshman Maggie Weller, who went 10 of 18 from the field for 23 points. Freshman Shiyah Forte dub-dubbed with 15 points and 13 rebounds, while Robinson added 10, shooting 50% from downtown.
