Women's Basketball Notches Two Conference Wins

SMC Women's Basketball won two conference games this week as they concluded the first pass through the MCCAA Western Conference.

On Wednesday, they stopped their mini-slump of two losses and grabbed a critical conference road win over the Glen Oaks Vikings, 81-53. The Roadrunners were up four after one quarter, but the Vikings got hot and took a one-point lead into the locker room. SMC pulled ahead after Q3 by 5, then put down the hammer in the final stanza, scoring 23 points in the last 4:42 to win going away. The Roadrunners' defense forced 22 turnovers and did not allow any of the Vikings to score in double figures. SMC was led by freshman Morganne Postell with 21 points, sophomore Amara Palmer with 12. Freshmen Maggie Weller and Caley Strahan each added 9 off the bench.

Then on Saturday, the dominance continued. Assistant Jessica Johnson coached the team as Head Coach Jay Jenkins was out ill. The LMC Red Hawks learned early they were in for a long afternoon as the SMC women's team started the home tilt with an 11-0 run. LMC did not score their first point until 4:30 left in the 1st quarter, ending the first period behind SMC 22-6. The Roadrunners kept on the pressure and led 39-12 at the half. Q3 was a bit closer, but SMC was able to pull further ahead in the 4th to move to 15-7 overall and 4-3 in the West with a 73-41 win. SMC was led by freshmen Morganne Postell and Rayvan Rush, each with 14 points, while Strahan had 9 and freshman Shiyah Forte added 8, plus 11 rebounds.

Next up, the second pass through the conference gauntlet continues as the Marian Ancilla Chargers visit the 1st Source Bank Fieldhouse on Wednesday, 2/5.
