Women Go 1-1 at the Kirkwood Classic

SMC Women's Basketball traveled west to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, this weekend to take part in the Kirkwood Classic. The Roadrunners came away 1-1 after the two contests.

On Friday versus the Kirkwood Eagles, SMC gave Kirkwood all they could handle in the first half of the game, trailing the defending national champions and current #1 D2 team by just one after Q1 and two at the half.

But it was a tale of two halves and the Eagles are #1 for a reason. SMC's offense struggled after the break and, despite staying close in the third quarter, they scored just 12 points in the entire second half and the Eagles pulled away for a 33-55 victory. The Roadrunners were led by freshman guard Morganne Postell with nine points, while freshman Rayvan Rush and Caley Strahan added seven each.

On Saturday, SMC defeated the John Wood Trailblazers by the slimmest of margins 57-56 in their second game at the Kirkwood Classic. It was back-and-forth all day, with SMC taking a four-point lead after one period and then trailing by three at the half. The Roadrunners were down four after Q3, but the final period had runs each way. SMC was up by one with 1:42 and held the score right there, successfully defending a last-second shot from the Blazers.

Postell again led the team with 16 points, Rush had 12, Strahan added 9 and freshman guard Olivia Robinson dropped in eight off the bench.

The Roadrunners are now 5-2 and have a week in the lab to get ready for the Muskegon Jayhawks, who visit the 1st Source Bank Fieldhouse on November 23.
