Magical Week for WBB

Magical Week for WBB

This week, the SMC Women's Basketball Team beat two rivals, won the conference title and earned the #1 seed for the Great Lakes District B Tournament. Not too shabby.

On Saturday, the Green and Gold took care of business in Centreville, beating the Glen Oaks Vikings 64-50 for another conference road win and eighth win in a row. The Roadrunners led by 8 after one period, by ten at the half, and kept their hosts at arm's length the rest of the way to earn the victory. Sophomore Cameron Thomas led the Roadrunners with 23 points and 7 rebounds, sophomore Macey Laubach added 16 and 6, and sophomore Nalani Williams had 9 and 12.

Tuesday night was even better as the team grabbed a share of the MCCAA Western Conference title by defeating the LMC Red Hawks 105-70 in the 1st Source Bank Fieldhouse for their ninth straight win. The Lansing Stars and Kellogg Bruins also share in the 3-way title.

The Roadrunners jumped out to a quick 13-4 lead and their press defense prevented the Red Hawks from even getting off a shot for the first 1:40 of the game. Red Hawk star Arial Ford left with 3 fouls with 1:15 left in the first quarter and did not play at all in Q2, allowing the Roadrunners to take a 57-31 halftime lead. SMC led by 32 after three quarters and won by 35. Laubach poured in 30 points on 12-16 from the field and 4-5 from the charity stripe, Thomas had 29 and freshman Amara Palmer added 15 in the rout.

SMC wins the tiebreakers based on their record against other NJCAA Division II teams, and therefore will be the #1 seed for the Great Lakes District B Tournament that starts on Tuesday, March 5 for the lower seeds. The Roadrunners receive a first-round bye and will play the #3 team out of the South at 8pm on Thursday, March 7 at the Ballenger Fieldhouse in Flint.

Before that, however, SMC gets a shot at the full MCCAA Championship and will play the Eastern Conference winner in Flint at 5:30 on Friday, March 1, with the winner of that game advancing to meet Mid-Michigan in the championship game on Saturday, March 2.
