Thomas Crosses 1,000 as SMC Stymies the Stars

Sophomore Cameron Thomas hit a major milestone for the Roadrunners. Needing 22 points to cross the 1,000-point threshold for her college career, Thomas had 26 in the biggest win of the season to date as the Roadrunners defeated conference leaders Lansing, 63-60, on Wednesday night.

After a close first quarter, SMC opened up a 7-point halftime lead. But as good teams do, the Stars cut the lead to just 3 at the end of the third quarter. The game was tied at 56 with 2 minutes to go. Despite poor shooting for much of the game, the Roadrunners were up 1 with 14.1 seconds left and stole the ball under the Stars' basket, leading to a Lansing foul on the fast break. SMC inbounded the ball to sophomore Macey Laubach who was fouled; she drained two at the line with 8.5 seconds left to ice the game. A final mid-range jumper was airballed by the Stars and the Roadrunners claimed their 7th win in a row and their 22nd overall.

Thomas led SMC scoring with 26, Laubach had 18 points and made 5 steals, and sophmore Nalani Williams was one point short of a double-double with 9 and 14 boards. Freshman Alanah Smith came off the bench and made 3 of 4 from the field for 6 critical points.

Next up, 22-3 SMC heads to 9-15 Glen Oaks on Saturday, February 24 for a rematch with the Vikings.
