WBB Takes Down Bruins in Battle Creek

The SMC Women's Basketball team rolled into Battle Creek and beat the Bruins on Saturday, earning a huge conference road win 82-80, handing the Bruins their first conference loss and getting some payback for the earlier home defeat.

In a back-and-forth game, the Roadrunners were down two after one period and down three at the half, but stayed right with the conference leaders to go up by one at the end of the third quarter. With 30.8 seconds left, SMC inbounded the ball, passed it to sophomore Macey Laubach, who drained a 3-pointer to knot the score at 80. After a timeout, SMC stole the ball in the lane at the Bruin end and raced down the court. Sophomore Cameron Thomas was fouled on the layup, then calmly nailed two free throws for the lead. The Roadrunners were able to stop Kellogg there and pulled off the biggest W of the season so far.

Thomas scored 36 points, A NEW SMC SINGLE-GAME RECORD, and Laubach had her own 30-piece as these two warriors were not to be denied. Freshman Amara Palmer had 6 points and eight rebounds, and sophomore Nalani Williams cleaned the glass with 11 boards.

SMC has now won five in a row and stands at 20-3 overall and 6-2 in the Western Conference - they have a bye on Wednesday to recharge before heading to KVCC on February 17.
