Men's Basketball Loses Heartbreaker, Then Avenges vs. Kellogg

SMC Men's Basketball playd through a range of emotions this week and split their home conference games.

On Wednesday, Marian Ancilla visited the 1st Source Bank Fieldhouse and the Roadrunners gave the Chargers all they could handle throughout the game. The Roadrunners were down four at the half, but battled hard the second half and tied the game with just 10 seconds left. But those 10 seconds proved too much, as the Chargers were able to sink a 3-pointer from the northeast corner at the buzzer to win 61-58. SMC was led by sophomore Aries Hull, who played all 40 minutes, poured in 19 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and logged two assists and a block. MCCAA Western Conference Player of the Week RJ Davis had 12 points and freshman Davion Goins added 10.

On Saturday, the Roadrunners faced another wild finish but wound up on the right side of the score, 67-66. SMC avenged last month's road loss at Kellogg. They started the game in an 0-5 hole, but charged back to tie it at 7. The game was tight the whole first half and the Roadrunners were up two at the break.

SMC's solid defense created headaches for Kellogg, who often had to use most of the shot clock to get a good look, leading to multiple violations. SMC built an 11-point lead with 3:44 left, but then it got dicey as the Roadrunners missed a few free throws and committed turnovers that almost cost them the game. Down a point, the Bruin's final shot at the buzzer missed and SMC escaped with the W. The Green and Gold were led by Hull with 20 points and 6 rebounds, Davis, Jr. with 15 points and Goins with 12.

Next up is a trip to Grand Rapids for a rematch with the Raiders on Wednesday, 2/12.
